Downlight Applications: Matching Family to Ceiling

Downlights go into very different ceilings. The family you choose, and the fields you check hardest, depend on what the space is for. These notes are general guidance; every project is confirmed model by model.

Retail

Shops use downlights to put light on merchandise, not just on the floor. COB downlights behind a reflector give the defined pool of light that accent work needs, and adjustable-angle versions let you re-aim after a layout change. Colour rendering matters most here because customers judge colour, and glare control matters too: an anti-glare version keeps bright points out of shoppers’ eyes.

Homes

Living rooms and bedrooms want comfortable light that can change through the day. Recessed COB or SMD downlights both work; dimming and adjustable colour temperature are the fields people notice, and smart WiFi versions add app control on selected models. Wall washing, as in the room shown, needs fittings set at a consistent distance from the wall.

Application

Hospitality

Hotels and restaurants combine both: accent light on tables and art, soft general light elsewhere. Anti-glare and adjustable-angle COB versions are the usual tools, and dimming compatibility with the site’s control system should be confirmed early, before fittings are ordered.

Application

Offices and corridors

Where light should be even and unremarkable, SMD integrated and panel downlights give a flat lit face. Matching colour temperature across every fitting in a run matters more than any single fitting’s output, so fix F6 once for the whole project.

Application

Refurbishment

When old fittings come out, the existing holes set the rules. Measure them, match F1, and check that F2 covers any damaged edge. GU10 and MR16 housings are a common choice where the client wants replaceable lamps. The cut-out size chart shows how to measure.
